Holy Week and Easter

16-23 March 2008
Holy Week and Easter is the most important week in the Christian Year. At St Peter’s, we mark it with a full range of services. The pattern for 2008 was as follows:

Sunday 16 March, Palm Sunday
8am Holy Communion
10am Parish Communion with the blessing of palms
12 noon Holy Communion

8.30am Holy Communion
8.00pm Reflection and compline

Tuesday 18 March
8.30am Holy Communion

Thursday 20 March, Maundy Thursday
8.30am Morning Prayer
7.30pm Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, followed by the Watch until midnight

Friday 21 March, Good Friday
8.30am Morning Prayer
10am Children’s service
10.45am Good Friday service outside the Summertown shops, organised by Churches Together in North Oxford
12 noon – 3pm The Three Hours (12-2pm preached by Revd Viv Bridges; 2-3pm the Liturgy)

Sunday 23 March, Easter Day
5.45am The Easter Ceremonies: the Easter Vigil, Lighting of the Easter Candle, Renewal of Baptismal Vows, Dawn Communion of Easter
8am Holy Communion

Lent services 2008

We began Lent as always with our Ash Wednesday service of Sung Communion with the imposition of ashes. A few days later on Saturday 9 February, Canon Barbara Doubtfire led a Quiet Day at Begbroke Priory on the theme: “Who do you say you are?

On Sunday evenings, we shared a series of services and talks with Summertown URC. Revd Janet Wootton introduced us to ‘Lenten Hymns’; Revd Mark Butchers and Revd Rachel Weir spoke about ‘Lenten Prayer and Fasting’; Revd Pauline Main gave a talk and visual presentation of ‘Lenten Themes in Art’; and Revd Rachel Weir led a Lenten Taize service.


Fairtrade Big Brew

Tuesday 4th March 2008
As part of Fairtrade fortnight, about 30 people of all ages came into St Peter’s during the afternoon to sample Fairtrade tea and coffee – not to mention the delicious home-made cakes!


Mothering Sunday

2nd March 2008
To prepare for Mothering Sunday, we organised an activity afternoon the day before, jointly with Summertown URC. And then on Mothering Sunday itself, a packed church enjoyed a lively service. The sermon was taken over by Jemima, Ben and Naomi Weir: they introduced us to the wonderful generosity of God our creator through the story of the feeding of the 5000.


Candlemas

3rd February 2008
We marked Candlemas with a Family Communion in the morning, at which the children gave out candles they had made the week before. Then in the evening, Dan and the choir led us in a beautiful candlelit service of Choral Evensong.


Teaching Service

27th January 2008
Revd Dr Mark Butchers led a series of reflections on Holy Communion during this service, in order to help everyone think more deeply about the service of Communion we celebrate week by week. Copies of the reflections are available via the link on the Services page.


Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

19-26th January 2008
On Sunday 20 January,Churches Together in North Oxford arranged a service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Service at Summertown United Reformed Church. Paul Valentin, International Director of Christian Aid preached about the work of Christian Aid and the united witness that offers.
